New DOT number leads: reach them before anyone else

Every weekday, hundreds of people register a brand-new trucking company with the federal government. None of them can haul a load until an insurance agent files their liability coverage. That agent can be you — if you know they exist in time.

Why new DOTs are the warmest lead in trucking

Most prospecting is persuading a carrier to switch. New-venture prospecting is different: the company has no policy, no agent, and a regulatory clock ticking. A new for-hire authority cannot activate until a liability filing (BMC-91/91X) reaches FMCSA, so the owner is actively looking for coverage the week they register. You are not interrupting them — you're answering the question they're already asking.

How many, and where

400–550 new USDOT numbers per weekday nationwide. Heaviest volume: Texas, California, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, and the New York–New Jersey–Pennsylvania corridor. Most are one-to-three-truck operations — owner-operators and small fleets starting out, exactly the accounts many markets write on a new-venture program.

Where the leads come from

FMCSA publishes its motor-carrier census daily, and each record carries a registration date. Filter the census for registrations in the last few days and you have the complete list of new companies, with the legal name, address, phone, and email the owner entered on the application, plus the fleet size and cargo they declared. Registrations show up two to three days after filing.

Even earlier: before the DOT exists

A trucking company forms its LLC with the state before it applies for a DOT number — often weeks before. Several states (Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania among them) publish new business registrations daily with the owner's name and address. Watching those for trucking-sounding names, then matching them against new DOT registrations as they appear, produces a pipeline that surfaces a carrier the day it goes federal — with the owner's name from the state filing already in hand.

Working a new-venture lead

  1. Call within 48 hours of the registration appearing. Every day that passes, another agent's list has them too.
  2. Lead with the process, not the price: "You'll need a BMC-91X filed before your authority activates — we do that the same day we bind."
  3. Have new-venture markets ready. Not every carrier writes zero-experience fleets; know which of yours do, and their driver-experience minimums.
  4. Collect the whole application at once — drivers, VINs, radius, cargo — because a new venture has nothing on file yet. An online intake link they can fill from their phone beats three phone calls.

Skarb pulls new DOT registrations by state every morning, enriches each with FMCSA and state-registry data, and can push them into an email sequence or dialer automatically — the whole workflow above, running before you sit down.

Frequently asked

How many new DOT numbers are issued per day?

Roughly 400–550 per weekday nationwide.

How soon do they appear?

Within about two to three days of registration, with the phone and email from the application.

Do new ventures need special insurance markets?

Often, yes — many standard markets require one to three years of authority. New-venture programs exist specifically for this segment; a good trucking agent keeps two or three appointed.
